The Guardian & Manchester Evening News is thought to be in negotiations with Lonrho to discuss a buy-out of The Observer. The newspaper group has made bids for the paper in the past, all of which have been rejected.

Channel 4 and International Management Group have made a last minute £1.2m bid to host the World Chess Championship between Gary Kasparov and Nigel Short. If successful the event is likely to be held in London later this year.
