Commercial television channels saw their network revenue decline in August as the BBC dominated ratings around the London 2012 Olympics.
Last month there was a lot about the Olympics… and it’s more of the same for August.
Commercial television channels saw their network revenue decline in July as the BBC dominated ratings around the London 2012 Olympics.
Cast your mind back to Thursday 26 July. Back then it’s probably true to say that a fair few people within the media (and some outside of it) were pretty negative about the Olympics. ITV1 enjoyed a 16.7% increase in network revenue in June, according to latest agency estimates.
June was not a great month for republicans who hate sport, as Euro 2012 and numerous royal-related programmes dominated the top programmes list.
ITV1 enjoyed a 3.6% increase in network revenue for May, according to latest agency estimates. It was the only broadcaster in our analysis to record a rise, with Channel 4, Channel 5 and ITV Breakfast all posting year on year declines.
In the perfect example of ‘losing the battle but winning the war’, the final of ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent achieved the highest ratings for May. Just under 12.6 million viewers stuck through the two-hour plus marathon on 12 May to see Pudsey the dancing dog go walkies with a £500,000 cash prize (oh and the chance to entertain royalty).
The broadcasters’ network revenue results show a poor month for April, with all of the broadcasters in our analysis posting a decline in revenue year on year.
A fairly non-remarkable month was dominated once again by the battle of the two major reality shows. Coming out on top was BBC One’s The Voice UK, with the 14 April episode proving to be the most-watched single edition of the month with just under 12 million viewers.
